Meetings of the President of BHRM in Bahrain

During his recent visit to Bahrain on 22 February 2009, the President of the Bahrain Human Rights Monitor Hasan Shafaei met with Sheikha Mariam bint Hassan Al Khalifa, Vice-President of the Supreme Council for Women and Dr. Lulwa Al-Awadi, Secretary-General of the Council.

The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Council and the aims and activities of the Monitor were introduced. Discussions also centred on means of cooperation between BHRM and the Council at both the local and international levels in order to benefit human rights in Bahrain, especially in the fields of documentation, research, international relations and culture and media. the Bahrain Monitor Newsletter for its impartiality and professionalism in the presentation of news and analysis, and observed that the Newsletter reflected a realistic picture of the human rights situation in Bahrain.

Furthermore, on 23 February 2009 Mr Shafaei also met with Dr Ibrahim Majid Al-Rumaihi, Executive Director of the Bahrain Institute for Political Development, and was briefed about the activities, aims and programmes of the Institute. During the meeting, Mr Shafaei shed light on the possibilities of cooperation and coordination between the Monitor and the Institute, especially with regards to spreading a human rights culture among citizens and promoting the values of democracy and its requirements. He also praised the efforts made by the Institute, which included the printing of several books and conducting research studies among other publications on the human rights situation in Bahrain.
