More Women’s Rights

On 1 February 2010, and on the occasion of Arab Women’s Day, the General Federation for Bahrain Trade Unions praised the achievements of working women since the reform period. However, it also pointed to the continuing gap between women’s rights as stated in the Constitution and what takes place in the real world. The Federation highlighted many outstanding issues, which remain under discussion in Parliament such as maternity leave, sexual harassment in the work place and discrimination against women with regards to wages, promotions and training opportunities. The Federation also organized a seminar entitled ‘Working Women: between Constitution and Legislation’ in which a Federation official, Suaad Al Mubarak, spoke of the increase of discrimination against women in both private and public sectors.
